“This Won’t Hurt a Bit”

I closed my eyes as I had been told and tried to think of nothing. The closed eyes were his suggestion, but the empty mind was my idea.
I waited.
I felt the prick of a needle on the side of my nose and he said, “Now I’m going to put the jewelry in your nose.” I opened my eyes and watched him twist the stud into my nose and all at once my nose wasn’t just my nose anymore, but it was now adorned with a singular piercing through the left nostril.
I shook his hand and thanked him as I walked into the rainy night.
